Better Choices, Better Health: Chronic Pain

This class is designed for people who have a diagnosis of chronic pain and their caregivers, offering strategies for dealing with their symptoms. Topics include: techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep, appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, appropriate use of medications, communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, nutrition, pacing activity and rest, and how to evaluate new treatments.

Program Overview

Better Choices, Better Health: Chronic Pain is a group workshop that meets online (virtually) 1 time a week for 6 weeks. A trained peer leader guides each session.

This program focuses on learning skills and supporting one another with chronic pain.

Key Learning Objectives
  • Develop ways to handle pain, stress, feeling alone, and poor sleep.
  • Discover gentle exercises to stay strong and flexible.
  • Recognize how to balance activity and rest.
  • Apply healthy eating basics.
  • Describe safe use of medicines.
  • Learn ways to talk with family, friends, and doctors to make health care decisions.
  • Recognize treatments that work best for you.
Who should attend?

Adults 18 or older, or their support person, who live with long-lasting pain.

Program Schedule / Format

This program meets online for 1 hour a week for 6 weeks in a group setting with discussion and activities.

A trained peer leader.

Program Materials Provided

You will receive a textbook, workbook, and other helpful handouts.

Expected Outcomes

You will learn skills to manage pain and feel better in daily life.
